Match the pass window to your long rail journeys, not simply to the length of your holiday.

Count consecutive calendar days
This pass runs for 14 consecutive days from your selected start day. Gaps spent sightseeing still use validity days. Compare the sum of eligible journeys within that window with the pass price, including extras.
A longer pass is not always cheaper
Price the shortest window containing your expensive trips. A shorter pass plus separate tickets for an isolated journey can cost less than extending the pass for the whole holiday. Avoid adding trips purely to reach break-even.
Check train and seat rules
The nationwide pass alone covers Hikari, Kodama, Sakura and other eligible services. To use Nozomi or Mizuho, buy the special pass-holder ticket before boarding, for each journey. Tokyo–Kyoto or Tokyo–Shin-Osaka costs an additional ¥4,960 per adult per journey. Regional passes have their own train rules.
