JR Pass or individual tickets? Compare total cost

A clear break-even example

If covered tickets total ¥42,000 and the pass costs ¥50,000, the tickets are ¥8,000 cheaper before extras. If covered tickets total ¥60,000, the pass could save ¥10,000 before extras. These are arithmetic examples, not route fare quotes.

Count train-specific extras

The nationwide pass alone covers Hikari, Kodama, Sakura and other eligible services. To use Nozomi or Mizuho, buy the special pass-holder ticket before boarding, for each journey. Tokyo–Kyoto or Tokyo–Shin-Osaka costs an additional ¥4,960 per adult per journey. Regional passes have their own train rules.

Then check flexibility

A pass can make changes to covered journeys convenient, but it does not promise seat availability or waive operator reservation rules. Ticket discounts can have their own restrictions.

Our planners use stored route and fare estimates. They do not check live timetables, seat availability, disruption notices, date-specific fares or every private-rail supplement. Treat the result as a shortlist, then check your chosen trains with the operator.
