Pass decision guide

Should I buy a JR Pass? Start with your route

Buy a pass when the covered travel you already want to do costs more than the pass and its extras.

Decide in four steps

  • Confirm eligibility. Nationwide and regional products have different passport / residency conditions.
  • List actual rail legs. Include return journeys, airport trains and the stations you will use.
  • Group covered travel. Compare the shortest consecutive pass window that contains it.
  • Compare complete costs. Add uncovered legs and supplements to the pass total; compare with tickets you can actually buy.

Start with ordinary tickets

A Tokyo city stay or a basic Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka trip is not automatically a national-pass itinerary. A 7-day Ordinary nationwide pass is ¥50,000 bought through the official website. Regional passes may fit a concentrated trip better.

Use an estimate carefully

Our planners use stored route and fare estimates. They do not check live timetables, seat availability, disruption notices, date-specific fares or every private-rail supplement. Treat the result as a shortlist, then check your chosen trains with the operator.
