The Tokaido Shinkansen links Tokyo with Kyoto. Choose your train before comparing a ticket with a pass.

Board at Tokyo or Shinagawa and travel to Kyoto. Allow around 2 hours 15 minutes on faster Nozomi services as a planning guide; Hikari and Kodama take longer. Use the operator’s timetable for your date, plus time to reach and leave the stations.
Kyoto Station is south of many sightseeing districts. Add local bus, subway or other transport to your hotel.
A single return trip on this corridor is usually well below the nationwide 7-day Ordinary pass’s ¥50,000 official online price. Additional long covered journeys are needed to make that pass competitive. Check actual booking prices rather than treating a stored estimate as a quote.
The nationwide pass alone covers Hikari, Kodama, Sakura and other eligible services. To use Nozomi or Mizuho, buy the special pass-holder ticket before boarding, for each journey. Tokyo–Kyoto or Tokyo–Shin-Osaka costs an additional ¥4,960 per adult per journey. Regional passes have their own train rules.
JR East and JR West regional passes do not cover the Tokaido Shinkansen. A Kansai regional pass cannot substitute for the Kyoto–Shin-Osaka Shinkansen ticket.
Nozomi becomes all-reserved during designated peak periods. Bags with total dimensions over 160 cm and up to 250 cm need an oversized baggage seat reservation on this corridor; check the operator’s current conditions.
