There is no direct Shinkansen to Sapporo. Travel by Shinkansen to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, then change to a limited express.

Tokyo → Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto: Tohoku / Hokkaido Shinkansen Hayabusa.
Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto → Sapporo: limited express Hokuto. Both need seat arrangements.
Allow most of a day. Around 8–9 hours or more is a rough planning allowance including a connection, not a verified departure-specific duration. The Shinkansen segment alone can take about 4 hours; the entire trip is much longer.
The nationwide JR Pass covers eligible trains on both legs. The Hokkaido Rail Pass does not cover Hokkaido Shinkansen, while the JR EAST PASS does not cover JR Hokkaido. For a mixed-region itinerary compare the JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass and its exact map; from March 14, 2026 it is ¥40,000 for 6 consecutive days.
Use current operator timetable search to confirm the arrival, transfer and onward train. Some late Shinkansen arrivals will not connect to Sapporo that evening. Snow or wind can affect travel; leave room in your schedule.
A stop in Hakodate can break up the journey, but central Hakodate is a separate station from Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto. Buy food and drinks before boarding: JR Hokkaido lists no onboard sales on its limited express trains or Hokkaido Shinkansen section.
